Coober Pedy, South Australia

We travelled south again and stayed at roadhouse caravan parks at Kalgera NT on Monday, then at Cadney Homestead SA on Tuesday. Easy drives, weather still held out. Arrived Coober Pedy just before mid-day on Wednesday. Plenty of flat land, scrubby ground cover and so very dry and dusty. The old sinuses are complaining with the dust.

Enough touristy things to do to keep us busy for the 3 days we stayed. On the second day we were there, we called in for a cup of coffee at 'The Didgeridoo Underground Cafe' - and what a mistake that was. The guy charged us $17.00 for a cup of strong coffee (flat white). We don't know what was so magic about his beans, but the coffee wasn't all that good, let alone what we were charged. Should have asked before hand how much he was going to charge. On Friday morning we tried again and called into "THE UNDERGROUND CAFE RESTAURANT" and it was a great cuppa - strong, half the price and first rate.

We went on a tour run by the Stuart Range Caravan Park (where we stayed). It was a 5 hour tour and took us to plenty of places - excellent value and great photos. A tour well worth taking. Really enjoyed this stay.

Alice Springs, Northern Territory

Loved our time in Alice Springs again. It has grown so much since we were there last. So much shopping. Lots of Aboriginal Art and souvenirs. Quite pricey for the average person. Big Coles and Woolworths - couldn't believe our eyes after what we had become accustomed to in the NT. Stayed at the Wintersun Caravan Park and it was great. A couple of km's from town and really quiet.

We packed our picnic lunches and headed out to Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap and surrounds. It's as beautiful as we remembered. The days were fine and averaged 24 Deg C, though in the chasm and at the water hole at Simpsons Gap it was breezy and chilly....had to put on the jacket. (Built in air conditioning). Todd River was bone dry (still). Lows were zero degrees.....great for sleeping.

Drove out to the Olive Pink Botanic Garden which has a self guided walking tour. Really interesting. They also have a great café doing breakfast and lunches. We had already eaten so we settled with a coffee. The best coffee we found was at Red Dog Café in town....

Saturday arvo Dave went to an all indigenous aussie rules footy game - he said it was a really good game - great sportsmanship without
all the punch-ups and nastiness shown in the games in the city. I went snooping in the shops LOL.

Sunday night we went out to Bojangles Saloon Bar/Restaurant for dinner. It was really great - a real blast from the past with all the memorabilia. Good pub grub and the staff were great too. Definitely a must if you visit Alice.

Wycliffe Well, Northern Territory

Ended up staying 3 nights here for the price of 2. An old though good roadhouse caravan park. Wycliffe Well is the UFO capital of Australia and the caravan park is 'alien' themed. Great for kids. We didn't see any spaceships or aliens, but then again maybe we didn't drink enough.

We drove out to the Devils Marbles from here (some 30km's away) and all we can say is WOW. Very impressive. The orange colour of the rocks is spectacular.

Also went for a walk around Lake Wycliffe, around 300m from the caravan park. Not a drop of water in it, just old tyres and the odd bit of rubbish as well as plenty of broken bottles.

Had a good, relaxing time and didn't miss technology one bit. Should have all signals go in Alice Springs, our next stop.

Dunmarra, Renner Springs, Three Ways, Northern Territory

Three more days of short hops down the centre, staying at the roadhouse caravan parks. Nothing exciting to write about really. All the travellers are after is preparing a meal and having an early night readying themselves for the next day's travel. Still no internet of phone signal, though that doesn't worry us. Luckily it hasn't been windy, so the drives have been more pleasant,

Mataranka, Northern Territory

Good easy drive and once again we stayed at Territory Manor Caravan Park. Drove out to Mataranka Springs and Homestead - not much has changed since we were there last other than storm damage to the palms and resultant plant debris. Waters are still crystal clear.

Also went out to Bitter Springs and had a swim in the thermal pool (around 32 deg C). The water was so clear and beautifully warm. Wish I could have one of these springs in the garden.....beautiful oasis.
