Just stayed the one night in Cloncurry and headed along the Barkly Highway to Mt Isa. Really interesting drive. Landscape changed dramatically from plains and sparse grazing land to the stunning Selwyn Ranges. Great rock formations and outback colours.

Mt Isa is a typical small mining town - wide streets and dusty LOL. The Leichardt river is bone dry ! The main tourism is mine tours, the WWII Era Underground Hospital, Gorges, Fossils,Royal Flying Doctor and School of the Air. We had a pretty slack time and rested up a lot. Had to book the car in for a log book service and had to wait a week to get it done, but what's the hurry heh. Once again the weather has been fantastic. Couldn't ask for any better !

Tomorrow we are heading further West towards the NT. Really looking forward to that.

Winton, Qld

We have really enjoyed Winton - the dinosaur capital of Australia, home of 'Waltzing Matilda' and boulder opal. Really had a good time exploring the outback here - plenty to see.

There's an eccentric man who built a fence around his property in which he has embedded motors, motorbikes, sewing machines, kitchen sink, oven doors, plumbing, hub caps etc etc etc. He didn't throw anything away and actually brought stuff back from the tip to put into his fence. It's like a piece of history.

Saw some lovely boulder opals, dinosaur tracks, fossils, conservation park - so much to see (and plenty of dust LOL). Weather still holding out beautifully. couldn't ask for better.

Longreach, Qld

Easy drive to Longreach. Drove through Barcaldine which has the 'Tree of Knowledge', a memorial to a tree under which the Labour Party was born. Ilfracombe is another small time on the Capricorn highway surrounded by mainly sheep stations. We have been lucky enough to have nice weather too. Evenings and early mornings are starting to get really chilly and the days are beautiful and sunny with a pleasant 22 deg C. Really perfect.

We were going to do the QANTAS Founders Museum, but found it too pricey. We explored and walked around and had quite a relaxing stay. Main industry is sheep and cattle farming. On Saturday we went to the horse races. It really was fun. Pensioners had free entry which was a nice surprise. Spent $2 per race (last of the big time betters LOL). With our bets and wins we ended up $6 in the red. At least we didn't have to remortgage the house heh.

The movie theatre was operating on Saturday night so we went and saw the movie 'Gatsby' which was viewing in 3D. Really enjoyed it and the 3D really brought it alive.

After the unpleasant time we spend at Lake Maraboon Caravan Park, we drove the 30km to Emerald and decided to try the Emerald Caravan & Cabin Park. It is really a lovely park and the staff coudn't be more helpful. We didn't let the previous night influence us. Finally ended up with a quiet, restful stay.

Went for some drives around including Sapphire, Rubyvale and Anakie. Gemstone mining country as well as cattle, sheep and crops. Nice town and people. Had our picnic lunches and thermos with us as there really isn't much around except for the cafe at Rubyvale (lovely coffee).

Tomorrow we head further west...don't know yet where we will rest our weary heads LOL.

Lake Maraboon, Qld

Decided to head to Lake Maraboon Caravan Park - around 30km from Emerald. Thought it would be nice and quiet - WRONG. We ended up with 2 camper trailers parked next to us and we knew we were in for it as they set up their camp including cartons and cartons of beer. They opened one of their car doors and had the radio blaring ..... in the end we had to ask them to turn it down around midnight. Could't even phone and complain to the owners as there was no signal.

When we approached one of the owners in the morning if they would say something to the noisemakers, he was most unsympathetic. Didn't want to know - treated us as though it was our fault. We asked for our money back and left. A really unpleasant stay !
